Contact Improvisation Workshops Worldwide

A workshop is a focused block of classes with one teacher or teaching team, typically a single day up to a weekend. It's the most common way to study a specific theme or technique without committing to a longer gathering.

Diving into the fabric of touch

Diving into the Fabric of Touch is a four-day workshop with Nita Little (September 6–9, 2026) at the Ouranos Club (Fontana Studio) in Arillas, Corfu, Greece. Daily sessions run 10:00–13:00 and 16:00–19:00. The workshop is a dive into the fabric of touch that is central to relational practices in Contact Improvisation — and for many, in the living of life itself. The material is steeped in somatic communication. This exploration begins within the self, then moves outward, to where selfhood becomes fluid: its instability is key to its creativity. Movement scores throughout the four days will make this connection tangible. Core themes include: moving weight like water — the actions of cascading; the details of touching within weight exchange; the rising and hanging of the body; how attention lives in the very small; extending to form surfaces that arc; trusting the physicality of extended intelligence that underlies reflexive action; and the many forms of temporal engagement. Practice will include substantial dancing — both as skills-building and open exploration. Nita Little is a founding developer of Contact Improvisation, who began over 50 years ago working with Steve Paxton at Bennington College and participated in its earliest performances and teaching. She holds a PhD in Performance Studies (2014) and is executive director of the Institute for the Study of Somatic Communication (ISSC). She investigates embodied attention within improvisational and technical movement practices, with a focus on ecological actions and somatic communication, and currently tours six continents. For dancers beyond the beginning level. Contact: agelikicranio@gmail.com

Compositional Awareness in CI

Workshop

Compositional Awareness in CI

Compositional Awareness in Contact Improvisation is a four-day residential workshop with Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood at Earthdance in Plainfield, MA (September 10–13, 2026). Contact improvisation offers a container for non-verbal communication, expanded awareness, and creative expression while allowing what is unexpected to emerge. Grounded in the core principles of CI and focused on the dynamic subtleties of touch, tone, and weight, the workshop expands perception to include space, time, image, gesture, and design through duet, trio, and ensemble dancing. A lightly held compositional awareness supports connection, meaning-making, and engagement with innovative possibilities for individual and collective improvisation. Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood (Montreal) is renowned as a leading figure in dance improvisation, an internationally recognised pioneer of CI and master teacher/performer in real-time composition. For over fifty years he has dedicated himself to the research, development, and dissemination of these practices as rigorous movement disciplines and performing art forms. He first studied and performed with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Nita Little, Daniel Lepkoff, and other original developers of CI, and has collaborated with Chris Aiken, Ray Chung, Kirstie Simson, Julyen Hamilton, Lisa Nelson, Benno Voorham, and many others. He received the Canada Council of the Arts Jacqueline Lemieux Award in 2000. Meals are included with lodge and camping tickets. All participants contribute to 1–2 work shifts (meal clean-ups) and a final house clean. Equity & access discounted tickets available (apply by Sep 2). Arrival Thursday Sep 10 from 4–7pm; departure Sunday Sep 13 after 3pm.

Well-being, Resilience and Healing

Workshop

Well-being, Resilience and Healing

A movement workshop with Charlie Brittain and Kirstie Simson. There is deep inspiration and rigour in a practice of improvisation that posits vulnerability at its heart. Developing the skills to be able to care for, engage, respect, and respond to that state of openness in oneself, others and our environment generates creative work that is powerful and transformative. Learning from a place of interconnectedness can give us the resilience and insight to face life's challenges and complexities. In honouring our body's innate attraction and drive towards wholeness, balance, creativity & healing, we will explore embodied intelligence and imagination utilising dancing practices that emerge from the radical softness of the heart-space. These reflective practices support us in witnessing the transformation and joy that is realised through the challenging simplicity of experiencing our bodies in motion. Over the course of the workshop, we will journey through shared dancing, scored movement explorations and space for group processing - affirming the poignancy of our human connectedness, and its implications for health and resilience in facing the universal and personal challenges of our lives today. The work emerges from the grounding of care gleaned from their extensive collective experience, comprising improvisation, Contact Improvisation, contemporary dance, Alexander technique, bodywork and myofascial release, movement rehabilitation, human biomechanics, musculoskeletal health, integrative health practice, Aikido, meditation and emergency care. Open level workshop offering valuable information for dancers, movement practitioners and health professionals including those with little or no experience. Includes performance "dying duets | shimmering" on 26 September 20:00.

Body of Water and Dirt

BODY of Water and Dirt 24-27 September in BUDAPEST Dance journey and contact improvisation with Pipaluk Join us for a beautiful trip into the moving body, into connecting bodies, into water and earth, and the sensory extravaganza of being alive. Our 4 day workshop takes us around Budapest, exploring in the studio, dancing in the warm waters, and re-discovering the city. We are artists, dancers, movers, explorers… shifting our perspective towards the simple, yet challenging, act of being present together. Improvising together, engaging in playful dances with gravity, is a beautiful way to process reality. You might argue that we improvise all the time, yet most of us tend to either overthink or repeat what we already know. Pipaluk (she/her) is our guide, a fun and intuitive teacher, she is all about being real, to use everything that we are, and allow the forces of the world to work through us. As human beings, as dancers and movers. Contact Improvisation is her long time passion, along with site specific movement discovery, and water dance. The diversity of movement in different environments offers us expanded body experience. Touching substance is an invitation, diving into the structural complexity of human bodies, as we study conscious interaction. To get physical, get dirty, to climb, fall and fly, savouring texture and sensation. We too, are nature - as we play, roll, jump, float, connect, and are allowed to be silent. Our workshop offers essential tools for an understanding of instant composition and relating. Our home is the dance studio, and from here we venture out to collect material and inputs. Expect both entertaining and profound experiences, as we are each other's teachers, and embrace curiosity and laughter. When having fun, our bodies are much more willing to open up and try something new. Pipaluk is a choreographer and independent producer, teacher and community organiser. She works with contact improvisation, contemporary dance improvisation and dance in nature. Pipaluk creates site specific performance projects and artistic meeting-spaces, encouraging dancers and artists to explore on their own terms. She researches, guides and performs around the world, and is also a musician and singer. In her life she studied and danced with so many inspiring and beautiful souls. Teaching and organising is her way of giving back, and to carry on the lineage of important ideas. Falling & Catching, Lightness & Flying — CI Weekend with Vega Luukkonen in Jena

Workshop

Falling & Catching, Lightness & Flying — CI Weekend with Vega Luukkonen in Jena

Falling and catching begins with our breath. We can use our natural breath cycle to synchronize and tune in with others. We will begin by playing with gravity and momentum, focusing on the ideas of falling and flying, both in solo movement and in contact with others. We start from looking at falling in micro-scale, growing our movement towards more complex actions. From researching the subtle mechanics of the 'small dance' we can discover fluid ways of lifting each other with lightness and ease: how do we catch ourselves, how do we catch each other. Using momentum, suspension, reaching, swinging and bouncing to catch each other into easy lifts moving through the space, or offering each other 'rides' down or up. Working with the frame of the arms, we explore ways to connect to the space and find counterbalance, providing frames to both lift and be lifted. We will focus on details and technique of body tone, alignment, and small points of contact, all helping with finding lightness in being lifted and efficiency in lifting. We will also find grounding and stability for the pelvis and center to play with variations of hip lifts, and look at landings: how to land softly and stay connected to a partner after the lift, so that lifts and weight shifts feel like part of the dance rather than separate events. Clear technical exercises and principles combined with plenty of time to research, lab, and explore, staying connected to improvisation, listening, and presence.

Principles and Practice

Workshop

Principles and Practice

Principles and Practice is a four-day Contact Improvisation intensive for advanced CI dancers with Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser at Studio Movity in Uster, Switzerland (October 9–12, 2026). Friday 13:00–19:00 · Saturday 10:00–17:00 · Sunday 10:00–17:00 · Monday 10:00–16:00 The workshop focuses on developing physical intelligence and emotional resonance in Contact Improvisation. Physical intelligence is not about specific movements but the ability to solve emergent tasks and situations that evolve through the dancing — providing mobile support, organising the body to be lifted, finding fluid pathways into and out of the floor, and the ability to push, yield, and pull away from a partner. It includes the ability to creatively engage: this is the poetics underlying the form. Physical intelligence involves perceptual acuity, the ability to hone in on what is significant to guide movement, and the capacity to be in touch with oneself, partners, and environment. Emotional resonance is the ability to notice how the dancing is affecting you, others, and your environment — the senses and the imagination of how we impact one another, including the ability to inhibit choices and to ask: "What if we tried something different?" or "What is missing here?" The work seeks to help dancers deepen their understanding of the core principles of CI and to become inspired through the interplay of touch, movement, and imagination. Chris Aiken is an internationally recognised performer and teacher of dance improvisation and Contact Improvisation. He has performed and collaborated with Angie Hauser, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark Smith, Peter Bingham, Andrew Harwood, Joerg Hassmann, Ray Chung, and Steve Paxton, and taught throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. His practice draws on years of dance and somatic training including the Alexander Technique, Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis, ideokinesis, and myofascial bodywork. He is a Professor at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Angie Hauser is a BESSIE Award-winning dancer, choreographer, and teacher whose work is grounded in improvisation, performance, and collaboration. Her long-time collaborations with Bebe Miller, Darrell Jones, and Chris Aiken have shaped a distinctive artistic practice. She has taught at the International Festival Freiburg, iDance Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan, West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Moab Jam, and the Montreal Jam. She holds an MFA from Ohio State University and is a Professor at Smith College.

Landing in Delight

Workshop

Landing in Delight

Landing in Delight — 4 days of Contact Improvisation, Solo Movement and Psoas work with Carmen Serber at the beautiful Hanna Barn on Vashon Island. This residential retreat is a deep immersion into easeful, timeless movement—into falling effortlessly through space, rising with clarity, and landing with buoyancy. It offers a space to cultivate coherence and refined spatial awareness by exploring subtle relationships within the body and how they resonate outward into movement and beingness. Psoas Work: Throughout the retreat, we'll work with our deepest fluid tissue, our psoas, located at the gravitational midline behind the abdominal muscles deep within the belly core. The psoas teaches us about tenderness, humanity, and life as a continuous unfolding. This work is inspired by Liz Koch. Dance practices/Contact Improvisation: We will explore the spine, pelvis, and limbs in relationship to the psoas. Playful micro movements and hands-on work will inform these processes. We will dance solo, in duets, trios, and as an ensemble. Structure: The retreat weaves together Contact Improvisation, solo practices, hands-on bodywork, rest and jamming. Chef Hannah will prepare nourishing dinners each evening and provide simple breakfast. Who Is It For: This offering is for those who wish to deepen their practice of Contact Improvisation and the art of relational movement, and who already bring a foundational understanding. Also welcomes dancers, therapists, bodyworkers, and athletes. What to pack: Water bottle, dance clothes, unscented toiletries, bedding, camping gear (if camping), rain jacket, knee pads, musical instruments. Refund Policy: 90+ days: refund minus 10% fee. 60-89 days: 25% fee. 30-59 days: 50% fee. 15-29 days: 75% fee. 0-14 days or no-show: none. Transfers allowed with $50 admin fee.

Contact Improvisation Upside Down

Workshop

Contact Improvisation Upside Down

2 days advanced Contact Improvisation workshop on dynamic inversions with Lewis and Laura. In this workshop, we will explore how inversions in contact can open up your range and play in contact improvisation. Overall it is a workshop for experienced dancers who are looking to become more comfortable in their upside down practice and who like to increase risk in their dancing safely. That means we will also look at falls and jumps to incorporate more dynamic weight shifts. We will take time to prepare the body and develop a deeper understanding of recovery, safety, and freedom in movement as we go along for a strong yet mindful practice to emerge. The workshop is coupled with deeper listening practices to ensure that dynamic dances are coupled with tuned playfulness wherein support, being with and generosity create dances that we truly co-create. Rather than highjacking, we are learning to fall with and into space, gravity and our partner as agentic material that we collaborate with. Lewis and Laura have been dancing alongside and together for many years now, crossing paths professionally and as dancers in jams. We are looking forward to engage this lab style co-teaching space to open up a new range for you and even ourselves, teasing out the corners we often cut and seeking the deeper trust and more rigorous play to embrace the delicious unpredictability of the form that continous to surprise and define us.

As each dancer finds support in their own structure and in the space around them, contact becomes lighter, more responsive and spacious, opening new possibilities for moving together. Together we will investigate weight-sharing, counterbalance, fluid lifts and seamless transitions, allowing flights, landings and moments of support to emerge naturally from the dance. Rooted in curiosity, playfulness and care, we offer clear technical tools while creating an inclusive space, where we can experiment, challenge ourselves and enjoy the process of discovering new possibilities together. We will work with the solo-body movement as well as in duets. There will be technical exercises, but also plenty of time for integration and playfulness through dancing. The workshop is designed for people with some prior experience with CI or solid experience in other movement diciplines. If you have quesitons, feel invited to reach out to us. The Theory of Zero

Workshop

The Theory of Zero

contact improvisation workshop and performance lab w Andrew Wass (Berlin) 27th-29th November 2026 for movers, dancers, actors, performers (basic knowledge of contact improvisation required) The Theory of Zero Zero: a beginning, a pause, a place holder, the link between positive and negative, a place of rest, half of infinity, emptiness, a space of potential, a point of departure, non-doing Following the Deleuzian idea that theory occupies a liminal zone between practices, this workshop explores zero as the common denominator threading through the fundamental triadic practices of Contact Improvisation. In articulating how zero links these practices, the workshop seeks to elucidate CI's processual nature, absent of teleology. We will draw on Martin's Re:Wire, Paxton's Material for the Spine, and related somatic techniques to cultivate a nuanced and subtle range of motion within our s/kinesphere. Moving into the duet and beyond, we will re-search how the triadic principles function, individually and in concert, toward the potential for great complexity born of layered simplicity. TIME Friday 18:00 - 21:00 Saturday 11:00 - 18:00 (incl lunch break) Sunday 10:00 - 14:00 Sunday class and jam 15:00 - 18:00 COST Early Bird, pay before 27th October 850 Dkr / 115 € Regular Price: 1.050 Dkr / 142 € Community, limited spots low income To register, write cicopenhagen@gmail.com To book your place, mobile pay 24339 (or get transfer-info) Event by CI-CPH ♥️ http://www.ci-cph.dk PRACTICAL Find our spacious studio in Vesterbro, incl lounge area, changing areas and kitchen. He has explored and taught contemporary technique, Contact Improvisation, and Ensemble Thinking for over two decades across Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Wass frames movement as both a site of investigation and a generative medium, dissolving the divide between analytic method and lived sensation. Wass has performed with dance luminaries Jess Curtis, Ray Chung, Nancy Stark Smith, Nina Martin, Kirstie Simson, Ka Rustler, and Chris Aiken. An avid collaborator, he is a member of the Lower Left Performance Collective, based in Marfa, TX. His performance work has been produced at venues such as Danspace at St. Marks, Martin Gropius Bau, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum for Contemporary Art, Sushi Performance and Visual Art, the Crowley Theater, and La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art. Wass completed an MA in Solo/Dance/Authorship at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum für Tanz Berlin, also teaching composition, yoga, and contact improvisation here. In 2024, he completed his PhD in Dance at Texas Woman’s University. His research investigated solo improvised movement in relation to concepts from cognitive science, phenomenology, psychology, and philosophy, developing a substantive theory about change in the moment.
