About this event
contact improvisation workshop and performance lab w Andrew Wass (Berlin) 27th-29th November 2026 for movers, dancers, actors, performers (basic knowledge of contact improvisation required) The Theory of Zero Zero: a beginning, a pause, a place holder, the link between positive and negative, a place of rest, half of infinity, emptiness, a space of potential, a point of departure, non-doing Following the Deleuzian idea that theory occupies a liminal zone between practices, this workshop explores zero as the common denominator threading through the fundamental triadic practices of Contact Improvisation. In articulating how zero links these practices, the workshop seeks to elucidate CI's processual nature, absent of teleology. We will draw on Martin's Re:Wire, Paxton's Material for the Spine, and related somatic techniques to cultivate a nuanced and subtle range of motion within our s/kinesphere. Moving into the duet and beyond, we will re-search how the triadic principles function, individually and in concert, toward the potential for great complexity born of layered simplicity. He has explored and taught contemporary technique, Contact Improvisation, and Ensemble Thinking for over two decades across Europe, Asia, and the U.S. Wass frames movement as both a site of investigation and a generative medium, dissolving the divide between analytic method and lived sensation. Wass has performed with dance luminaries Jess Curtis, Ray Chung, Nancy Stark Smith, Nina Martin, Kirstie Simson, Ka Rustler, and Chris Aiken. An avid collaborator, he is a member of the Lower Left Performance Collective, based in Marfa, TX. His performance work has been produced at venues such as Danspace at St. Marks, Martin Gropius Bau, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum for Contemporary Art, Sushi Performance and Visual Art, the Crowley Theater, and La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art. Wass completed an MA in Solo/Dance/Authorship at the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum für Tanz Berlin, also teaching composition, yoga, and contact improvisation here. In 2024, he completed his PhD in Dance at Texas Woman’s University. His research investigated solo improvised movement in relation to concepts from cognitive science, phenomenology, psychology, and philosophy, developing a substantive theory about change in the moment.
