About
Makisig Akin (they/them) is a queer, transgender Filipino-born choreographer, dance artist, facilitator, and activist, raised in the Philippines and now based between Berlin, Germany and Denver, Colorado. Their work focuses on the recognition of intersectional identities, reconnecting with ancestry, and decentralizing Western ideologies in dance making. They co-founded The Love Makers Company, a project-based dance company, with Anya Cloud. They have practiced Contact Improvisation for 15 years and taught in communities including HZT, UCLA, ImPulsTanz, Tanzfabrik Schule, Brown University, The Field Center, and the Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation. Their teaching is deeply interconnected with their training in Filipino Traditional Dance, Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Improvisation, walking meditation, Authentic Movement, Bouldering/Climbing, and Contemporary Dance. They examine how survival strategies can be translated into a communal physical practice, using it as a catalyst for a creative healing process.
