Irene Álvarez

Dancer, physiotherapist and Contact Improvisation teacher based in Gijón, Asturias. Dance has been part of her life since childhood, with training in classical and contemporary dance, butoh, dance theatre, flamenco and yoga. She found Contact Improvisation in 2010 and it has been one of her main areas of practice and research ever since, studying with teachers including Mirva Mäkinen, Linda Búfali and Asaf Bachrach across Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, India, England, Germany and California. Co-creator of the Asturias Contact Festival, held annually since 2015, she organizes workshops, jams and gatherings across Asturias, Cádiz and Portugal, and teaches at festivals including La Manzana de Paxton, Portugal Contact Gathering and Paris Contact New Year. She runs ALMAIARA in Gijón, offering treatments, classes and intensives.
