Petra Kuppers

About

Petra Kuppers is a community performance artist, disability culture activist, and wheelchair dancer, and the Anita Gonzalez Collegiate Professor of Performance Studies and Disability Culture at the University of Michigan, also advising the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College. She has explored Contact Improvisation, Butoh, Laban Creative Movement, and many somatic modalities, engaged in community dance and disability culture production since the late 1980s. She worked as a community dance artist in rural Wales for 10 years, mainly with mental health system survivors, people in the last months of their lives in hospices, and people in significant pain, and currently runs weekly online disability culture movement classes, Starship Somatics, through Movement Research. Since 1996 she has stewarded The Olimpias, an international disability arts collective engaging people gently and with care to create more inclusive and just futures. Her books include Disability and Contemporary Performance: Bodies on Edge (2003), The Scar of Visibility: Medical Performances and Contemporary Art (2007), and Community Performance: An Introduction (2007).
