About
Javier Cura is an Argentine-American movement pedagogue and multidisciplinary artist whose work centers on bringing movement back into sedentary lifestyles. He completed a Master's in Modern Literature at the University of Buenos Aires before turning to the fine arts, creating exhibitions of objects, sculptures, and installations in Buenos Aires. He has performed, directed, and created dance-theatre works in Argentina, Colombia, the USA, Italy, Germany, and Indonesia. He teaches Contact-Tango, physical theatre, and Contact Improvisation internationally, regularly visiting England, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Argentina, and has taught at ZIP Contact Impro Festival (Orvieto, Italy), Freiburg Contact Festival (Germany), Alchemie Tango Festival (Prague), the West Coast Contact Impro Festival (San Francisco), and Phantastango Tango Festival (Germany). A piece merging tango and contact in a physical-theatre context was presented at Prague's Farma Festival, Italy's Terni Festival, and in Mar del Plata, Argentina. In 2009 he was invited by Fabrik Potsdam Dance Theatre Festival to create a physical theatre and tango show with workshop participants. Based in Berlin, he leads workshops under the name "The Ecological Body," alongside Contact Improvisation, Tango, Contact-Tango, physical theatre, and voice-in-movement work (the latter together with Moss Beynon Juckes). His teaching draws connections between the objective, physical body; the subjective, emotionally expressive body; and the body in relation to others — using community, play, and creative exploration to help participants reconnect physical practice with personal expression.
