About this event

A 13-day residential Contact Improvisation workshop and jam at Leviathan Studio on Lasqueti Island, BC — a dedicated CI research centre accessible by ferry (June 14–27, 2026). Arrive Sunday 14 June afternoon; first class Monday 10am; final class Friday 26 June; departure Saturday 27 June on the 11am ferry. Mark Young leads the morning class, connecting Tai Chi with Material For the Spine and Contact Improvisation through spiral movement. Beginning with floor work — rolling, safe landings, exploring the fear reflex — the class builds through overcoming old habits and finding new movement pathways. The Tai Chi framework, grounded in spiral organisation (the natural structure of bone and muscle), enables both strength in lifting and lightness in flight. Lilianna Kane leads the afternoon class, approaching CI as a practice of embodied inquiry — philosophical, relational, and somatic. Her work focuses on attention, timing, and the subtlety of weight: pushing, pulling, pouring, receiving. She draws on Barbara Dilley's Contemplative Dance Practice as a structure for durational scores, training mindfulness, disorientation, and deep somatic awareness alongside physical skills. Evenings are decided by the group: open jams or screenings from the history of Contact Improvisation. $1,800 CAD includes all meals, snacks, accommodation, tuition, taxes, and transport to and from the ferry. Register and enquire via the Leviathan Studio website.
