Kiori Kawai (Japanese, b. 1978) is a dance performer/choreographer, interactive installation artist, and educator. Her career began in New York, working with organizations including Carman Moore/Skymusic Inc., Elaine Summers Dance and Film, and Lincoln Center, with work presented internationally at venues including the Brooklyn Museum, Serralves Contemporary Museum in Portugal, and the Sharjah Biennial (UAE). She has developed a personal movement vocabulary drawing on meditation, Kinetic Awareness, Contact Improvisation, yoga, and diverse dance trainings, which she carries into interactive installations incorporating human movement within kinetic sculpture. In 2011 she co-founded Purring Tiger with Aaron Sherwood, a multicultural, multimedia interactive installation/performance group, with work commissioned by Burning Man Arts Festival, the Brooklyn Museum, and other institutions. She teaches workshops on performance, interactive installation, and Contact Improvisation internationally, including at NYU Abu Dhabi and dance academies across the US, Europe, and Australia.
