About this event

A four-day workshop with Finnish CI teacher and researcher Mirva Mäkinen, exploring what she calls "Essence of Trace" — an embodied anatomy of Contact Improvisation. The workshop approaches CI not through copying shapes or forms, but through kinesthetic learning: understanding how to stay connected and grounded in movement. Drawing on the physical laws that govern CI — gravity, momentum, inertia — the work invites participants to release excess muscular tension and develop a natural flow. The practice includes rolling, falling, inversions, following a physical point of contact, and working toward movable support and gentle flying technique. Mirva Mäkinen is a Finnish dancer, choreographer, teacher, and researcher with over 25 years of international experience in contemporary dance. She holds a Doctor of Dance from the University of the Arts Helsinki, where her research focused on the somaesthetics and values of Contact Improvisation. She has taught and performed in over 40 countries and collaborated with numerous renowned companies, including the Cullberg Ballet. The workshop is organised by Contactus — Contact Improvisation Salzburg — and takes place at tanz_house Studio in the ARGEkultur cultural centre.
