About this event
Contact Improvisation (CI) & Fascial Maneuvers Intensive "When Being a Body is a Home, a Temple, and a Playground." Five intense days of practice, play, reflection, and jams dedicated to exploring the tissue that wraps and holds everything together inside our bodies—fascia—and its invisible yet intimate relationship with the space surrounding us and, within that space, with other bodies. We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate once again with Teresa G. Valenzuela at Casa Mirua. It is a tradition that brings abundant humanity, a sense of humor, liberation, and delicacy—essential nutrients for the principles of Contact Improvisation. As a dancer, researcher, and educator focused on "becoming aware"—moving from anatomy to play—she naturally addresses one of her primary areas of interest: the gaps in our awareness... "everything we do when we don't know what we are doing," in the words of Steve Paxton. This "awareness" draws from many sources; it remains open and capable of evolving by incorporating the latest findings in the relatively new field of fascia research: Fascial Maneuvers. Fascia—often called the body's "third brain"—is the organ of communication. It is a sentient intelligence made of water and sand that orchestrates, moves, and deeply affects us as a unified whole. It is an integrative system that shapes, informs, and connects all the body's systems—the physiology of Unity. It is a network of connective tissue, characterized by tensegrity, that holds our entire body together—a system where any single point has the potential to become the center. Fascial Maneuvers constitute a practical movement philosophy developed by the Human Garage collective; the practice focuses on the qualities of fascia to regenerate and reorganize us in a way that supports Life. These are short sequences of slow, counter-rotating movement, involving pressure changes through voluntary resistance and specific breathing techniques. They eliminate internal noise, stress, and inflammation while supporting and stimulating processes of repair and evolution. A form of daily physical, emotional, and energetic hygiene. It is also a tool for individual and community transformation, connecting the physical and anatomical Self with the Self as a space for meeting oneself and others. x Teresa García Valenzuela "For 25 years, my path has been guided by the art of presence and communication. I am interested in creating an atmosphere of trust and creative collaboration where one can live authentically, honoring both one's own awareness and that of others." My approach to movement incorporates practices of attention, collaboration, and challenge. It involves games of listening and creative spontaneity that grow richer as you play them, creating a virtuous cycle of giving while you give.
